Remove the Background From a Signature

Upload a photo or scan of your signature. PureSign finds the ink, removes the paper behind it, and gives you a transparent PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

Private by design. Your signature is processed on your device and never uploaded.

How to remove the background from a signature

  1. 01

Get an image of your signature

Use a photo, a scan, or a screenshot. PNG, JPG, and WEBP up to 10 MB work. On a phone, the Upload tab also offers a Take a photo button.

  2. 02

Upload it and remove the background

Drop the file into the tool above and choose Remove Background. It takes a moment and happens on your device.

  3. 03

    Check it on the checkerboard

The preview sits on a checkerboard, so any leftover paper or speck is easy to see. Open Refine to erase specks, restore a stroke that went missing, crop, change thickness, or recolour the ink.

  4. 04

    Download the transparent PNG

Download the PNG, or continue to a PDF with the Sign a PDF button and your signature is already loaded.

What gets removed, and what stays

The goal is a signature that still looks like ink, not a cut-out.

Paper, shadows, and scan noise go

Off-white paper, a soft shadow across the page, and grain from a cheap scanner are treated as background and made transparent.

Edges stay soft

Strokes fade out gradually at their edges instead of being cut at a hard line. That keeps pen pressure and anti-aliasing, so the signature does not look jagged when you shrink it onto a form.

Your ink colour is kept

Blue stays blue. In Refine you can switch to black or pen blue if the photo turned your ink grey or purple.

It does not guess at text

A page with a printed line or a typed name next to your signature can confuse any ink detector. Crop to just the signature before uploading, or use the Crop tool in Refine.

When the result is not clean

Most problems come from the photo, and most have a quick fix.

Strokes look hollow

Very thick marker strokes can lose their middle. Turn on Fill thick strokes in Refine, or sign again with a thinner pen.

Thin strokes break up

Pencil and pale gel ink are close to the paper colour. Re-sign with a dark ballpoint, or use Restore in Refine to paint missing pieces back in.

It says "no signature found"

The image is blank, very busy, or the signature is tiny in the frame. Move closer, use plain paper, and retake the photo.

A shadow or ruled line survives

Use Erase in Refine to wipe it by hand. For a cleaner start, see the guide to photographing your signature.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove the background from a signature for free?

Upload a photo or scan of it to the tool on this page and choose Remove Background. You get a transparent PNG to download. Yes. There is no account, no watermark, and no email wall. Guests and free accounts get a daily allowance of exports, and the pricing page has the current numbers.

Is my signature photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded. If you close the tab, nothing remains. A signature is only stored if you choose to save it to your vault after signing in.

Does it use AI?

No. It uses image maths in your browser: it compares each part of the photo with its surroundings to find ink. There is no model to download, so it starts quickly.

Can I remove the background from a signature that is already in a PDF or screenshot?

Yes. Take a screenshot or export the page as an image, crop it close around the signature, and upload that image. The cleaner and larger the crop, the better the result.

Why is there a white box around my signature after download?

The PNG itself is transparent. A white box usually comes from where you place it, for example a JPG export or a document editor that fills the image background. Keep the file as PNG.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On phones and tablets the Upload tab has a Take a photo button, and before processing it warns you if the photo is too dark, overexposed, low contrast, or blurry.
