Sign a Word Document

Word files are signed in two steps: turn the document into a PDF, then sign the PDF. You can also drop a signature picture into the Word file itself.

Private by design. Your PDF is processed on your device and never uploaded.

How to sign a Word document

  1. 01

    Finish editing the Word document

Make all your changes first. Once it becomes a PDF, you cannot easily turn it back into an editable Word file.

  2. 02

    Export it as a PDF

In Word, choose File, then Save As or Export, and pick PDF. In Google Docs, choose File, Download, PDF document. In Pages, choose File, Export To, PDF. LibreOffice has File, Export as PDF.

  3. 03

Open the PDF in the tool above

Drop the exported PDF in, add your signature, and place it on the signature line.

  4. 04

    Download the signed PDF

Send the PDF. If the other side needs Word back, use the second method below instead.

Two ways to sign a Word document

Method 1: export to PDF, then sign

Best when the document is final. The layout is locked, fonts are embedded, and your signature is placed on top by PureSign. The recipient gets a file that is hard to alter by accident.

Method 2: insert a signature picture in Word

Best when the other side must edit the file. Make a transparent PNG with the signature maker, then use Insert and Picture in your editor. Resize it onto the line. Because the PNG is transparent, the text behind it stays visible.

Tips for a clean result

Leave room for the signature

Add a blank line or table cell where the signature will go before you export. It is easier to place a signature on empty space.

Check page breaks after export

A PDF shows what Word laid out. Scroll through the exported file before signing so a signature block does not sit alone on the last page.

Multi-page documents

Guests and free accounts can sign single-page PDFs, up to 10 MB. Multi-page signing is part of the Pro plan, which also raises the PDF limit to 100 MB. If your file has several pages and you only need one signed, split out that page first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a .docx file with PureSign?

Not directly. PureSign works with PDFs and images. Export the Word document to PDF, then sign the PDF.

How do I convert Word to PDF?

In Word use File, Save As or Export, and choose PDF. Google Docs offers File, Download, PDF document. Pages has File, Export To, PDF.

Can I put my signature straight into Word?

Yes. Create a transparent PNG with the signature maker, then insert it as a picture in Word and resize it. This keeps the file editable.

Will the signed PDF look the same as my Word document?

It will look the way Word exported it. Check the PDF before signing, because that is what everyone else will see.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Your PDF is read and signed inside your browser tab and is never uploaded to our servers, whether you are a guest or signed in. The only file we ever store is a signature you choose to save to your vault after signing in.
